Finally Monique finds her foster-daughter back in Austria

Monique Rotthier and her family would like to find Ulrike Rohregger, a ‘holiday-fosterchild’. During the seventies, Ulrike spent her holidays with the Rotthier family.

The story

In 1972, Monique and her husband do not have any children of their own. They are very fond of children, so they decide to contact the Caritas agency in order to give a needy child a very nice holiday. That same year, thanks to the Rotthier family, ten-year-old Ulrike is able to come to Belgium to spend the holidays for the first time ever.

Almost immediately the Rotthier family becomes very fond of Ulrike. Ulrike comes from a large family. At home, life is not easy and Ulrike’s family only have a two-room apartment for eight people.

Ulrike and her Belgian holiday family get along very well. During the summer, they make lots of trips together. Ulrike even remembers that she was able to visit the Austrian mountains with her holiday family. This was very special to her because her own family was not able to spend the little money they had on trips, not even in their own country.

Saying goodbye was the worst part at the end of the ‘foster-holidays’…Monique Rotthier still remembers it very well: “A flood of tears for both of us when we put Ulrike back on the train to Austria…those were very sad moments…”

Until 1977, Ulrike is able to come and spend her holidays in Belgium. But in 1978, she is not allowed to come anymore: despite her very young age, she has got to go to work…

One year later, the Rotthier family can visit Ulrike at work in Winterberg , Germany. She is working as a waitress in a restaurant. That was the last time they saw her. After that, they lost contact. Monique still tries to trace Ulrike through the help of friends, but Ulrike seems to be vanished…

On vacation in Belgium

First of all, we looked for Ulrike again in Austria . There we were able to locate Ulrike’s family that pointed us to the direction of Eichendorf, Germany.

Ulrike was very moved when she found out that her “Plege-Eltern (foster parents) were looking for her. She had tried very hard as well to find her holiday family back, but never succeeded.

She is very happy and looking forward to see the Rotthier family again very soon…!

Monique Rotthier: “I was very moved when you told me that you’ve found back Ulrike! We are all very surprised and happy that the search went that quickly. I am going to contact her as soon as possible. On October 12 th 2004 , our eldest daughter gave us our first grand-child and we would like Ulrike to get to know the baby as well!! We would like Ulrike to become a part of the family again, so we are inviting Uli for Christmas and New Year…, that will be so fantastic!!”
