Liberation child Marcella finally knows her American familyIn april 1946, Marcella De Saegher was born in Bornem-Belgium. She was a liberation-child. Her storyIt was a depressing time in Bornem-Belgium during the second W.W.. Fortunately, the arrival of the American and Canadian soldiers brought the little town back to life. The soldiers were temporary set up in camps at the banks of the river Schelde. Marcella’s (step)dad had a band so there was always lots of entertainment at their place- and of course the soldiers liked to visit! One day, Richard Shanklin came walking through the door... Richard Shanklin and Mieke – Marcella’s mother – got a love affair, but soon after the war Richard has got to back to the United States. No contact was maintained. Richard never knew that on March 12th 1946, Marcella gave birth to his little girl... For ten years now, Marcella has been looking for her father. Although she has got an address in Columbus-Ohio, her search has not been successfull at all. Because of her dark complexion, Marcella has always been an outsider so she really wants to know where her roots lie... People Finder Worldwide found...
Unfortunately, Richard Shanklin was shot during a bar fight and he died on March 14th 1961. But the search continues! We keep on looking and find that Richard Shanklin worked in a restaurant as a cook. But what is much more important: there still are other relatives!! Richard Shanklin was married two times. Ethel Lee is the daughter from his first marriage. Mabel and Daisy are the daughters who result from the second marriage of Richard Shanklin with Nelly. Nelly and Mable have been found again and are currently living in Washington! Marcella: I think I’m going to the U.S. very soon. Finally, after 60 years, I really do want to meet my family! I’m so happy to have found the answers to all my questions…thank you, thank you very much!! |
